These cylinders are used to power the movement of the main boom, up and down. Boom cylinders are typically larger and more powerful and can generate significant amounts of tare out force to move the boom when working.
On larger machines it is common that there will be two boom cylinders, one on either side of the boom, provides the excavator with its reach, allowing the operator to position the arm and bucket precisely for digging, lifting or placing materials.
